By the late 350s, Rome was exhausted.  Barbarians on the borders.  Civil wars.  Plague cycles.

Inflation chewing through the treasury.  Silver? Gone.  Gold? Hoarded.  Bronze? Shrinking.  And yet…  They’re still striking coins that literally say:  “The Restoration of Happy Times.”  While stabbing a barbarian off a horse.  The propaganda machine never sleeps.

Translation:

 Rome was broke.  That “silver” content?  Basically ceremonial.  Earlier coins at least had a silver wash.  By this point? It’s copper with vibes.  They’re shouting “Happy Times!”…with 0.47% silver.

The reverse shows a Roman soldier spearing a fallen horseman.  It’s not subtle.

It’s:  “We’re fine. Everything’s fine. Look, we’re winning.”  Meanwhile the coin weighs 1.79 grams. That’s not a currency system.  That’s a coping mechanism.
